UFC Sanchez vs. Kampmann: Predictions for KO, Submission and Fight of the Night

UFC Sanchez vs. Kampmann: Predictions for KO, Submission and Fight of the Night Two days after UFC 127, fans find themselves a few days away from the March 3rd card featuring a main event in the welterweight division between Martin Kampmann and Diego Sanchez.A bout between welterweight contenders Diego Sanchez (22-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) and Martin Kampmann (17-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) is set for UFC on Versus 3 and likely will headline the show.

The Versus-televised event takes place Thursday, March 3, though a location and venue haven't been finalized.

It'll be the first UFC on Versus show of 2011. As part of the UFC-WEC merger, Zuffa LLC signed a deal with Versus to air four UFC shows on the all-sports cable station in 2011. Two aired this year as part of an inaugural deal between the two.

Sanchez, the winner of the original season of "The Ultimate Fighter," recently returned to the welterweight division after a solid run at lightweight. However, after a title loss to B.J. Penn and with a rematch unlikely, the Greg Jackson-trained moved back up to welterweight, where he dropped a unanimous decision to John Hathaway at UFC 114. However, he rebounded in October and topped Paulo Thiago via unanimous decision to get back in the win column.

Kampmann, meanwhile, looks to rebound from a close and somewhat controversial split-decision defeat to UFC newcomer (and former Strikeforce champ) Jake Shields at UFC 121 in October. Prior to the co-main-event loss, Kampmann, a former middleweight contender, posted a 4-1 record in the welterweight division with wins over notables such as Carlos Condit, Jacob Volkmann and Thiago.

We’re now only a few days away from the third installment of the UFC’s “UFC on Versus” series, also known as “UFC Live”. In the main event, Diego Sanchez battles Martin Kampmann in a bout where both men’s divisional relevancy will be at stake. The co-main event will also be an interesting match-up, as tough Middleweights CB Dollaway and Mark Munoz lock horns. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring “UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez vs. Kampmann”.

Brian Bowles vs.  Damacio Page: I’ve simply got to favor the former WEC Bantamweight Champion. It’s been almost a year since Bowles last fought, though, so I expect him to show up a bit rusty. Even so, Damacio Page simply hasn’t been able to do too much against top-ranked competition. Even worse, Bowles has beaten him once before. But thanks to ring rust and Page’s toughness, I’m predicting that Brian Bowles wins by Unanimous Decision.
Alessio Sakara vs.  Chris Weidman: I hate to pick against Chris Weidman, because I really think the man has a very bright future both in the UFC and in general, but this is a terrible first fight for him, especially considering that Sakara is on a fantastic three-fight win-streak that includes two (T)KO wins, one of which earned him a “Knockout of the Night” award. This is simply a matter of too much experience, it’s too tough of a test for Weidman’s first go-round in the UFC. Part of me hopes that Weidman proves me dead wrong and wins by TKO in Round 1, but I’m going to side with my head and not my heart on this one and call for Alessio Sakara to win by TKO in Round 2.
C.B. Dollaway vs.  Mark Muñoz: This is definitely a tough fight to call, since both men share so much in common. They’re both relatively new to the sport. They’ve both lost twice. They’ve both had some pretty dominating victories in the Octagon. Both have stumbled against some tough competition in the past. In the end, I’ve simply got to go with the man that’s currently on a three-fight win-streak, and took home a “Submission of the Night” award for his last fight. CB Dollaway will win by Unanimous Decision.
Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann: This is certainly the toughest fight to call, given how multi-dimensional and evenly-matched both men are. I think both men are incredibly motivated for this fight, and that they’re at their best when they’re this motivated. It’s going to be a total war, with lots of give-and-take, but I simply think that Sanchez has it in him to give Kampmann the first two-fight losing-streak of his career. Diego Sanchez wins by a very tough, very close Split Decision.
And that’s what I think will happen when “UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez vs. Kampmann” goes live on the Versus network, fans and friends. What about you? Who do you think will win big at “UFC on Versus 3”, and why?
The undercard includes two middleweight bouts: C.B. Dolloway vs. Mark Munoz and Alessio Sakara vs. Chris Weidman. The first bout is a bantamweight match between Brian Bowls and Damacio Page.
Preliminary fighters include Joe Stevenson, Rousimar Palhares and Thiago Tavares.

Knockout of the Night: Alessio Sakara
Sakara's opponent is 4-0 in MMA and is making his UFC debut. Sakara holds an overall record of 15-7 with a UFC record of 6-4. Four of those six victories have come by knockout.
The majority of this card is filled with grapplers and wrestlers so Sakara has a good chance of showcasing his standup skills to earn a knockout victory over an opponent who doesn't have the same experience as him.
If this fight stays on the feet, look for Sakara to earn his 10th knockout victory, and the award for "Knockout of the Night."

We’re now only a few days away from “UFC on Versus 3”, also known as “UFC Live 3”. In the main event, a resurgent Diego Sanchez takes on the tough Martin Kampmann. Sanchez is coming off of a great victory over Paulo Thiago, and many are wondering what’s next for the one-time UFC Lightweight Championship contender. What happens if he beats Martin Kampmann? Here’s my take on just that: a new edition of “What If He Wins?” featuring Diego Sanchez.

Sanchez will be back on Pay-Per-View with regularity.
The only way I don’t see this happening if Diego wins is if it’s a boring fight. And while Sanchez is many things, he’s usually never boring. If Sanchez beats Kampmann, the UFC will fully invest into his comeback and begin putting him against the division’s best talent. With a few more wins, Sanchez may even find himself in the co-main event slot of a major Pay-Per-View.
Diego Sanchez may end up facing Brian Ebersole.
There’s a lot of unanswered questions that are still hovering around Brian Ebersole, even after his shocking win against Chris Lytle. Can Ebersole really hang with the elite of the division? Now that the element of surprise is no longer there, will Ebersole’s unorthodox style hold up, especially against someone like Sanchez, who is also pretty unorthodox? This would be a tough test for both men, and I’d love to see it happen.
Diego Sanchez will probably face Josh Koscheck sooner or later.
This rematch comes at a perfect time for both men. If Sanchez beats Martin Kampmann, he deserves a high-profile fight against a top-division opponent. And it doesn’t get much more high-profile than a rematch with the man who just got done fighting for the UFC Welterweight Championship, and who also just happens to be the first fighter to ever give Diego Sanchez a loss. Josh Koscheck also needs several “rebound fights” in order to keep his Welterweight relevancy intact, and once again beating Diego Sanchez, especially with Sanchez in the middle of a comeback, would be an excellent start.
If he remains active, Diego Sanchez will have to beat BJ Penn to get a shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship.
I think this is the one thing Diego Sanchez absolutely has to do in order to make a serious claim for a shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship. Of course, this all depends on whether or not BJ Penn is still fighting at Welterweight, or even still fighting at all, by the time Sanchez compiles the type of win-streak necessary to warrant a second encounter with the man who so thoroughly beat him at Lightweight. But if the stars align and all the pieces fall into place, Sanchez should absolutely pursue a rematch with Penn in order to wash away what was undoubtedly the most one-sided loss of Sanchez’s career.
And that’s what I think, fans and friends. What about you? What do you think the future holds for Diego Sanchez if he manages to beat Martin Kampmann at “UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez vs. Kampmann”?
Submission of the Night: Rob Kimmons

Which of these will be Fight of the Night?

  • Sanchez vs. Kampmann

    81.5%
  • Dollaway vs. Munoz

    11.1%
  • Sakara vs. Weidman

    3.7%
  • Bowles vs. Page

    3.7%
  • Total votes: 27
Kimmons is 23-6 in MMA and 3-3 in the UFC. His opponent, Dongi Yang, is 9-1 in MMA and 0-1 in the UFC.
Kimmons has earned 14 victories by submission, and with a third degree black belt in American jiu-jitsu, his submission skills can't be overlooked. If other submission artists like Palhares don't earn a submission victory, Kimmons' may be the one to steal the award for "Submission of the Night."
Kimmons loves to choke his opponents out. Of his 14 submissions, 11 of them have come by way of rear-naked and guillotine choke.
The main event of the night, this MMA fight is a classic striker versus grappler matchup. Sanchez is a solid wrestler that should have no problems dominating the grappling. Kampmann is clearly the better striker. Despite the fact that Kampmann has showed decent takedown defense in the past, Sanchez should be able to secure takedowns and finish off Kampmann on the ground. Sanchez wins by TKO
C.B. Dollaway versus Mark Muñoz
Tough fight to call, both men are solid MMA fighters. Muñoz has faced tougher fighters in the past, and that experience will help against the well rounded Dollaway. Muñoz wins by decision.
Alessio Sakara versus Chris Weidman
Undoubtedly the toughest fight in Weidman's short fight career, Weidman will try to keep his undefeated MMA record intact. He will have a hard time against the tough veteran Alessio Sakara, who is currently on a three fight win streak. Alessio's experience will prove too much for Weidman, and Weidman will suffer his first loss in professional MMA. Sakara wins by TKO.
Brian Bowles versus Damacio PageBoth MMA fighters will look to make good impressions with the fans in their UFC debut. Given the fact that Bowles has only lost to one of the best MMA fighters in Dominick Cruz, he should have no problems taking care of Damacio Page. This fight ends just like the first one, Brian Bowles wins by submission.
Joe Stevenson versus Danny Castillo
The UFC didn't do Danny Castillo any favors, when they matched him up with Joe Stevenson in his first appearance in the octagon. Joe Stevenson is coming of tough losses to Mac Danzig and George Sotiropoulos, and is hungry for a win. He will come out aggressively against Castillo, and should overwhelm the UFC newcomer with some serious ground and pound. Joe Stevenson wins by decision.

Takeya Mizugaki defeats Reuben Duran
Dong Yi Yang defeats Rob Kimmons
Rousimar Palhares defeats Dave Branch

Fight of the Night: Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann
It's hard to think this won't be "Fight of the Night." The styles these two fighters possess makes for fireworks and intensity every time they fight.
Sanchez is coming off an impressive win over Paulo Thiago. After a tough first round, he overwhelmed the Brazilian to earn a unanimous decision. Joe Rogan called it Sanchez' greatest performance to date.
Kampmann's last fight was a split-decision loss to Jake Shields. It was a fight he could have won, but he neglected to stand and instead took the fight to the ground where Shields was the more experienced fighter.
This fight will go everywhere. Both fighters are well-rounded enough that wherever it goes, it will be competitive. Both are hard to finish and can push themselves to the limits.
Neither fighter stops looking for the finish, and both possess two of the best chins in the welterweight division.
This fight may even go down as a candidate for "Fight of the Year." It's going to be one to remember.
